Our Story

Who and What is the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel?

The Assembly of the Sacred Wheel is a legally recognized Wiccan non-profit religious organization based in the Mid-Atlantic region.  The form of Wicca that the Assembly practices is syncretic and draws inspiration from Astrology, Qabala, the Western Magickal Tradition, and the folk religions of Europe.  Keepers of the Holly Chalice, the founding coven of the Assembly, began its life in February of 1984 and is the Mother coven of our Tradition.  The Assembly was incorporated in the State of Delaware in 1993 and was granted Federal 501(c)(3) status by the IRS in 1995.

Why is it called Grail of the Birch Moon?

The Assembly of the Sacred Wheel is astrologically based in its structure. There are twelve Circles within the Assembly, one for each of the 12 Zodiacal signs. Each Circle contains within it four Covens. Each Coven bears one of the four elemental tools (East/Air/Sword, South/Fire/Staff, West/Water/Chalice, North/Earth/Pentacle).

The first Coven of a Circle is always of the element that matches the sign of the Circle (Capricorn = Earth = North).  Each coven holds stewardship over the tool of its element. That tool is the center of the Coven's group mind and the repository of the wisdom, experiences and information that the group gathers during its existence. Each member of the group adds to the energy and 'intelligence' of the group mind over time, feeding and shaping it. Because of its importance to the group and its special relationship with the other tools within the Circle of which it is a part, it must be created from scratch, with singular focus and intent. The tool never exists until it is birthed into its Coven and Circle.

As the eleventh Assembly coven to come into existence, Grail of the Birch Moon is the Water coven in the Circle of Capricorn, hence, ‘Water of Earth’. This coven takes the chalice as its elemental tool which represents healing, emotion, intuition, and divination. Birch is associated with new beginnings, purification, creativity, renewal, and rebirth. The Moon reflects the brilliance of the Sun’s light, illuminating the night, the hidden inner realms and, reveals things not readily apparent in the light of day. It also represents the polarity of the dark and the light, healing, and the ever changing ebb and flow of life.

Our sacred tool is a chalice made primarily of Birch.
